Watching a Movie Without Sound

In this challenge, I test the capabilities of visual storytelling and of the human mind. A visual narrative is a story told primarily through the use of visual media. Many television shows such as SpongeBob heavily rely on visual storytelling as a fail-safe in case its translation or localization is inadequate, or its audience is too young to understand the dialogue. The TV show I chose was in fact SpongeBob, and the episodes I picked were 'SB-129', 'Plankton!', and 'Arrgh!'.

SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated comedy television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his aquatic friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The fifth-longest-running American animated series, its popularity has made it a media franchise. It is the highest rated series to air on Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks' most distributed property.

SpongeBob SquarePants characters include SpongeBob SquarePants, Mr. Krabs, Squidward Tentacles, Patrick Star, Plankton, Karen, Sandy Cheeks, Mrs. Puff, Pearl Krabs, Gary the Snail, Patchy the Pirate, French Narrator, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, The Flying Dutchman, King Neptune, Larry the Lobster, Harold and Margaret SquarePants, Grandma Squarepants, Perch Perkins, Bubble Buddy, DoodleBob, the Tattletale Strangler, SpongeGar, Stanley SquarePants, Primitive Sponge, Dennis, and Princess Mindy.

Besides the TV show, SpongeBob has movie spin-offs: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), and Sponge on the Run (2020/2021). The television show also has a play: SpongeBob SquarePants, The Broadway Musical (2016); and made for television movies: SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePants (2007), SpongeBob's Truth or Square (2009), and SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout (2019).

SpongeBob has transcended into meme culture with such examples as caveman Spongebob; tired Spongebob; no, this is Patrick; savage Patrick; and Squidward Looking Out the Window.

A video essay is a piece of video content that, much like a written essay, advances an argument. Video essays take advantage of the structure and language of film to advance their arguments. While the medium has its roots in academia, it has grown dramatically in popularity with the advent of the internet and video sharing platforms like YouTube and Vimeo. While most of such videos are intended for entertainment, some argue that they can have an academic purpose as well. In the classroom, video essays have many educational applications including conversation openers, active viewing opportunities, copyright lessons, and assessment opportunities. Popular Video Essayists include Lessons from the Screenplay, Wisecrack, Now You See It, Royal Ocean Film Society, Thomas Flight, Kaptain Kristian, Every Frame a Painting, and Nerdwriter1. Video Essayists who have covered SpongeBob include Full Fat Videos (Spongebob Squarepants: The Art of the Gross-Up | Video Essay, Band Geeks Is The Best Spongebob Episode (Why It's Great)), EmpLemon (there will Never Ever be another cartoon like Spongebob Squarepants.), Karsten Runquist (Why Do We Love Spongebob? | Video Essay, Why Sponge Out of Water Sucks, Spongebob's Darkest Episode), Entertain The Elk (The Day SpongeBob SquarePants Died), and Quinton Reviews (How Spongebob Predicted Meme Culture).

Challenge Videos feature Internet users recording themselves taking a challenge and then distributing the resulting video through social media sites, often inspiring or daring other users to repeat the challenge. Popular challenges include the Ice Bucket Challenge, Mannequin Challenge, and Running Man Challenge. This video is a challenge video that you can recreate yourself!
