Russia has reportedly cut its natural gas exports to Europe,.. causing prices to skyrocket across the continent as the middle of winter sets in.
While some say the move is due to the geopolitical tensions over Ukraine,... Moscow insists that isn't the case.
Kim Hyo-sun reports.
Amid simmering tensions between Russia and European nations,... Moscow has decided to cut the flow of gas supplies to Europe.
The move has sent prices surging as the continent prepares for a week of sub-zero temperatures.
Over the weekend, shipments through the Yamal pipeline,... that runs through Belarus and Poland to Germany,... were at their lowest point in at least a month.
Russian media outlets explain that daily shipments fell from 27 million cubic meters last Friday to around five million cubic meters over the weekend.
In addition,... westward gas flows through the pipeline stopped on Tuesday,... according to Reuters,... which added the gas may have been redirected back to Russia.
While some Western politicians and pundits have accused Russia of halting gas deliveries amid political tensions over Ukraine,... Moscow denies any connection.
Some have also pointed out that Russia's move could be in connection to delays in the certification of Nord Stream 2,... a Baltic Sea pipeline built to ship natural gas from Russia to Germany.
A Kremlin spokesperson said Tuesday that this is "a purely commercial situation."
Europe is largely dependent on imported gas,... with Russia supplying 40 percent or more of those imports.
