Curator Conversations - October 30 - The Medal of Honor and the Marshal
Our Curator tells the story of US Marshal James Elliott Williams and the event which earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor in Vietnam.
He led a patrol boat detachment into a fight with Viet Cong forces on October 31, 1966. His actions and leadership earned him the Medal of Honor. A Cherokee Indian and the most decorated enlisted man in the history of the US Navy, Williams was later appointed as the US Marshal for the District of South Carolina. He went on to work as an instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and at Marshals Service Headquarters.

The United States Marshals Museum is a national museum located on the riverfront in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Once open, we will tell the story of our nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency from its establishment by President George Washington through current day. The Museum will honor the sacrifice of Marshals killed in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to place their lives in harm’s way as they enforce the Constitution.
