Rock Rolls On - 1984 Part 1 of 7

DJ: If you talk to the average teenager today and you ask them what it is about rock and roll music that they like, and the first thing they'll, the first thing they say is, "the beat, the beat, the beat."
From the nifty 50's, the psychodelic 60's, to the outragious 70's to the awesome 80's. Rock rolls on. Starring some of the great all time rockers of the past 30 years. With your hosts, Laura Branigan and Chuck Berry. With their special guest, Dick Clark. And featuring preformances by Freddy Cannon, Chad and Jeremy, Cheap Trick, The Drifters, The Human League, Jan and Dean, Johnny Rivers, The Shirelles, Three Dog Night and X, with an affectionate look back at the people and events that influences 30 years of rock and roll history.
And, now from the exciting new dance Pavilion, at spectacular Knotts Berry Farm in Bueno Park, California, here are your hosts Laura Branigan and the legendary Chuck Berry.
Chuck Berry: Thank you.
Laura Branigan: Thank you, and welcome to 2 solid hours of fun, music and memories. We're going to turn the rock and roll clock back to the 50's.
Chuck: Ah, you're too young for the ..., and anyway, on to the 60's and 70's and 80's.
Laura: That's right, all the way back to the 80's. Chuck, how 'bout we get this rock rollin' right now?
Chuck: All right.
Laura: Well ladies and gentlemen, I can't think of a better rocker to open our show than our first guest. His credentials as a rock and roll pioneer are legendary.
Chuck: That's fantastic! Who are you talking about?
Laura: Don't be so modest.
Chuck: Ahh, I thought you's walking 'bout me.
Laura: He's been one of the most significant creative forces in rock and roll. The Beatles named them as one of their early influences. He was there at the beginning. He's a giant star to this very day. Ladies and gentleman, the legend, Chuck Berry.
Chuck: All right! Thank you, Laura.
Chuck Berry, "Johnny B Goode" ::
Chuck: Well, alright, thank you.
Laura: You are fantastic. My my. (audiences member screams) You said it. What was it like, Chuck? I mean, at the beginning, when rock and roll was just a whee little baby.
Chuck: It was fantastic, just fantastic. Really, Laura.
Laura: I wish I could have been there.
Chuck: No, you're too young, you're too young. Lets hear from a man who was there. Ladies and gentleman, America's greatest living teenager, Dick Clark.

Dick Clark: Ms Branigan and Mr Berry, it's very nice to be with you both. It's going to be a fun show. I know, Chuck likes to tease me all the time, but the truth is I have been very fortunate. I was there to witness the birth of rock and roll. And, I've had the pleasure of watching it mature and grow into the incredible form of entertainment it is today. Now, around 1955 a new generation of postwar teenagers with money to spend were looking for a music identity of their own. And, they found it the song from a film called "The Black Board Jungle".
Bill Haley and The Comets opened the door, and a host of new talent played through, led by a man who combined the roots of country with the energy of rhythym and blues. Now, they would ultimately call him "The King", but they started out calling him "Elvis the Pelvis".
Elvis Presley: Well, the generation that you're talking about, as far as I'm concerned, well they're just ahh something, natural. I mean, that's just my way of expressing a song, I can't help it.
Dick: Now, dispite the protests of early critics, the new music was really very simple and innocent. Young love and teen angels. From drive-in movies to beach parties.

Laura: And, if you were lucky, you ran into some very talented guys. Under the boardwalk. Ladies and gentlemen, here are The Drifters!
:: The Drifters, "Under the Boardwalk" ::
(TOKYU commercial, because I thought it was hysterical)
Laura: Our next guests had their first rock hit back in 1958. Along with the Supremes, they are one of the most successful female singing groups of the rock era.
Chuck: And, I've had the pleasure of working with these ladies, many times. Welcome The Shirelles.
:: The Shirelles, "Baby It's You" ::
