Walter Rempening Rico, pastor of Templo Ebenezer Church, a Spanish-speaking Anabaptist Mennonite congregation in Cuauhtémoc, discusses his experiences growing up as the child of a Mexican mother and Mennonite father in the city of Cuauhtémoc. He explains the historic tensions that existed between the Canadian Mennonite communities who settled in the Campos and the Russian Mennonite community, comprised of refugees from the Soviet Union, who settled in the city of Cuauhtémoc since they were not allowed to settle in the Campos because of their differing views on education, technology and cross-cultural interactions. He describes his experiences at the Álvaró Obregón School in Quinta Lupita in the 1960s and 70s where he encountered Campo Mennonites for the first time and learned how to speak Plautdietsch. He talks at length about how he met his first wife Josefina Díaz and how they became co-pastors of Templo Ebenezer in the early 1990s alongside EMC church planter Elvira Friesen. Walter reflects on how well his wife and children were received by the Mennonite communities in the city and in the Campos, especially during his wife’s time as a music teacher at Blumenau Church. He briefly talks about how Mennonite communities supported and comforted him and his family when his wife and 2 of her sisters were kidnapped and murdered while traveling to a family funeral in the Sierra Tarahumara in 2012.
