José Luis Domínguez: "Me gustaría ver una literatura menonita propia" (English Subtitles)

José Luis Domínguez, autor de 12 libros, incluyendo una historia comprehensiva de los Menonitas, La otra historia Menonita (2015), describe su infancia en Cuauhtémoc y sus conexiones la comunidad Menonita como un trabajador del campo cuando era joven. Él también enfoca en la historia de su abuela que tenía 12 años cuando llegaron los Menonitas a Cuauhtémoc (San Antonio de los Arenales) in 1922 y como le recibía un jarra de leche como un regalo de los Menonitas bajando el tren. José Luis Domínguez, born and raised in Cuauhtémoc, author of 12 books, including a comprehensive history of Mennonites in Chihuahua titled, La otra historia menonita (The Other Mennonite History) discusses his connections to the Campos Menonitas of Chihuahua, beginning with his grandmother who was 12 years old when the Mennonites first arrived in Cuauhtémoc from Canada in 1922. He talks at length about working as a field hand as a child, alongside his uncle on Mennonite farms. He describes the process of researching, writing and publishing La otra historia menonita and notes that the vast majority of sources were only available in English or German and that his book was the first comprehensive history of Mennonites in Chihuahua written in Spanish. He explains that the book did not have as good of a reception in the Mennonite community as he would have like because it is in Spanish, rather than German and that he hopes that the book could be translated into German in time for the centennial of the Mennonites arrival in Mexico. He maintains that his biggest hope for the Mennonite community in Mexico would be the formation and production of their own unique literature. He describes how events in Chihuahua directly after the Mexican Revolution impacted Mennonite arrival in the region and land distribution as a result of the 1916 Ley de Los Ejidos effected land ownership and economics in the years immediately following the Mexican Revolution. He ends the interview by arguing that despite popular sentiment otherwise, that Mennonites have actually separated themselves from Cuauhtémoc even more than in the past through the construction of the Corredor Commercial, the formation of their own banking systems, and by continuing to limit personal and social contact based on religious criteria.
