Peter Rempel: "Mi abuela no dijo, 'No hablo español'" (English Subtitles)

Peter Rempel, a Kleingemeinde school teacher and a committee member for a Tarahumara primary school, Ministerio de Amor, located in Colonia Manitoba, discusses his educational experiences as a student and teacher giving particular attention to how school reform in the colonies has impacted Kleingemeinde curriculum and instruction. He reflects the past and present relationships between the Mennonite and Tarahumara communities and describes how he began working with the Tarahumara community giving detail to the history and long-term goals of Ministerio de Amor. He talks at length about his relationship with the school’s director Bruno Ramos Rivas, a Tarahumara man who has lived and worked in the Campos Menonitas for many years after leaving his home in the Sierra Tarahumara in search of economic opportunity. He also speaks in detail about the fact the school is staffed entirely by Tarahumara teachers, one of whom, Bruno Ramos Rivas’ wife Alicia, who worked as a Tarahumara interpreter for the Mexican government, and how he believes it is important for Tarahumara children to retain their language and culture. He reflects on the economic conditions that have spurred Tarahumara migration from their homeland in the Sierras to urban and rural communities across northern Mexico and how this has impacted cross-cultural interactions in the Campos Menonitas. He closes the interview by discussing his personal journey to become more open in cross-cultural relations and his hopes for interactions between Mennonite, Mestizo, and Tarahumara communities in the future.
