Fitness Myth: Weightlifting Belts (Why I DON'T Use a Lifting Belt!)
Should you wear a belt when lifting weights? Maybe, maybe not.
I very, very rarely wear a weightlifting belt. I don't even own one. This workout was the second time I've ever worn one.
Those statements might seem sacrilege to hardcore powerlifters, but it's more reasonable than you might think.
There's either zero or negligible evidence that belts prevent injury at all. They might give a minor performance boost to some, but that could actually be at the risk of long term spinal health, as it can make your technique more tolerant of spinal flexion than it otherwise would be.
If you do use a belt, at least do some of your training beltless. This isn't necessarily to "prevent your abs from getting weaker" but just to get you comfortable with both techniques. You should be able to train without one when needed and still be comfortable and confident.
