Ethiopia confirms completion of second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) - Ethiopia has finished the filling of a gigantic, contentious dam on the Blue Nile river for a second year, official media has stated, a move that is certain to irritate Egypt and Sudan who have long opposed the project. Ethiopian government has stated that the $4 billion infrastructure investment Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is critical to the country's economic development and electricity generation. However, the project has raised concerns about water scarcity and safety in Egypt and Sudan, both of which rely on the Nile's waters.
Both countries have demanded a binding legal agreement before dam construction bids can begin, but mediation efforts have failed, prompting fears that tensions would grow as a result of the most recent statement.
Seleshi Bekele, Ethiopia’s minister for water, irrigation and energy said on Monday that, “The second filling of the Renaissance dam has been completed and the water is overflowing,”
“It means we have now the needed volume of the water to run the two turbines,” he said on Twitter.
According to Seleshi Bekele ,"the next milestone for GERD construction bids is to realize the early generation in the next few months,"
