Kobe and Gil duel in their Part 2 battle of the 2006-07 season. Part 1 on December 17th included the famous 60 from GA while Kobe got 45 as the Wizards defeated the Lakers in Overtime. 60 still exists as the highest total scored against the Lakers at Staples. It’s 2nd to Shaq’s 61 for most scored by a Staples opponent (Clippers included).

Part 2 saw Kobe go for 39 on an efficient 14-26. Gil got 37, but shot it poorly at 9-29. Although LA pulled out the win, it didn’t take away from Arenas’ display of fearlessness when challenged by his superstar contemporary. On multiple possessions following a Kobe score, Gil found Bryant guarding him and immediately waved off his teammates choosing to isolate. Arenas’ had an amazing NBA career, a lethal scorer during his peak, but 2 of the most memorable plays of his career came amidst a regular season game in February. This regular season game, vs Kobe. It includes the killer cross layup in the 1st half, and the cross 4-point play in the 2nd. Similar to Young Iverson’s cross on Jordan, Gil going at Prime Kobe, shaking him twice with a cross and scoring both times makes the tape for any Agent 0 career highlight mix.
