Kobe - 27.1 Pts, 6.3r, 3.9a, 1.4s and 1.1b

Led by Chris Webber and 1st-year King Mike Bibby, Sacramento appeared determined to dethrone Shaq & Kobe’s dynasty-in-the-making Lakers. LA had previously defeated the Kings 3-2 in the 2000 WC First Round, and swept them in the Conference Semifinals of 2001. After a NBA best 61 win season, the ‘02 Kings appeared the team with the most realistic chance to beat the Lakers.

The Pacific Division Rivals LA Lakers and Sacramento Kings battled in an absurdly competitive, intense, hard fought, chaos infused and often surprise filled 7 game series. Besides game 3, each matchup was decided by less than 8 points. This included games 4 and 5 with 1 point margins brought about by game winners.

While Kobe’s numbers were good, not great, he played his tail off logging 44 minutes/game. His situational play in the 4th quarter of games 1, 4 and 7 proved to be vital, as the 23 year old consistently made plays down the stretch. The must win games 6 and 7 prompted Kobe to put up back to back 30p, 10r and 5a outings.

Personally, the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and Kings is the best series I have ever watched from beginning to end. I was too way too young at the time to grasp it’s magnitude, but I have since watched each game thoroughly. Every possession impressed upon me the importance that both teams placed on winning. It was the definition of 2 heavyweights going toe to toe. The basketball world was able to witness the most competitive 7 game slugfest amidst the 21st century so far.
