This talk is about the many “discourses of discipline” that encircle the issue of “corporal punishment” (taibatsu) in Japanese schools and sports. These discourses encompass the ways that people discuss discipline, the patterns of rhetoric about what discipline should be, as well as what discipline signifies. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the research process that led to writing Discourses of Discipline, and briefly offer an update regarding recent related events in Japan.
