Kudaushe Matimba playing the Zimbabwean marimba at the SOAS Graduation 2015
This video is from the 2015 SOAS Graduation Ceremony and shows the procession music by Kudaushe Matimba. In Zimbabwe the marimba (wooden xylophone) is played for joyous, energetic dance music, normally played by an ensemble of eight, to produce a solid wall of interlocking rhythms and melodic lines. A virtuoso marimba player and former member of the legendary Bhundu Boys, Kudaushe Matimba is a SOAS graduate and bandleader of Harare Music, one of the very few groups playing Zimbabwean dance music in Europe today. While Harare combines different styles from jit to jive to the traditional hypnotic rhythms of the mbira, into songs about social awareness and life yesterday, today and tomorrow, this performance will showcase the exuberant rhythms of the marimba xylophone.
