APRS in the 21st Century is this ham radio mode relevant still?

One of a series of videos covering APRS.

I have been a fan of APRS since getting my licence. There is a lot to this mode of operating beyond tracking people and objects.

Does this mode have a place in the 21st Century, we can do most of the functions seen in APRS from our mobile phones via 4g...but where's the fun in that?

This video provides an introduction (or reintroduction!) into the packet system.

This video covers:

Tracking of objects and people
Sending messages via SMS
Updating a web bulletin board
Receiving weather data

PLEASE NOTE: The bit I mention about APRS Police taking your gear away if you abuse the system...hmmm :-)
