Stevie wrote "Smile At You" in 1976. She recorded it for 'Tusk' in 1978 but the song did not make it on the album. In May 1981, Stevie recorded "Smile At You" again for the 'Mirage' album, and this recording is from those sessions. This is not the same outtake as on the 2016 Deluxe reissue of 'Mirage.'

In September 1981, while doing press for her mega-successful 'Bella Donna' album, Stevie told Bay Area Magazine that "Smile At You" would most likely not make the final cut on 'Mirage' because it was too dark and bitter, and she didn't feel that way anymore.

Copyright evidence exists for Stevie recording "Smile At You" in 1999 for 'Trouble In Shangri-La,' but nothing has circulated so far.

In 2002, Stevie once again recorded a new version of "Smile At You" with Fleetwood Mac, which was released in 2003 on the 'Say You Will' album.
