Kalidasa shloka, Pauline Reibell, Vaikom, India, 2016

Poem learned from Rama Vaidyanathan

Kalidasa Shloka

Vagarthaviva sampriktau vagarthah pratipattaye | Jagatah pitarau vande parvathiparameshwarau || – Raghuvamsha 1.1

Vagarthaviva Sampriktau
Word and its meaning come together

Vagarthah pratipattaye
Word and its meaning can’t be separate

Jagatah Pitarau vande
like the Universal couple and Parents I respect and honor

Parvathi Parameswarau
Whose names are Parvati and Shiva

Popular meaning: I pray parents of the world, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi, who are inseparable as speech and its meaning.

On the surface, this verse looks like a simple prayer addressed to deities Lord Shiva and Parvathi. Aim of the prayer is to gain knowledge of speech and its meaning, i.e. to acquire proficiency in literature. If we dig deeper, we uncover more exciting, mystical and spiritual insights.
