Epiphone Les Paul set up

This guitar is one of Mark's that has sat unplayed for too long - mainly because it originally had some serious fret problems AND a noticeable twist in the neck. Mark brought it over a couple of months ago and we re-fretted it and gave it a fret levelling and a set up...but in the intervening time, he found he wasn't playing it even though it was equipped with his favourite Seymour Duncan 'Pearly Gates' pickups. Something still wasn't right.

He brought it over this time primarily to lift out the Pearly Gates and transplant them to a black Epiphone with a nicer playing feel. Makes sense. An old Epiphone set went back into this cherry LP and I suggested he leave it with me for a while so I could see if I could make it more lovable than it currently was.

This video shows me performing another fret level on this guitar using my U-channel truss rod for maximum stiffness to prevent flexing. Judging by the amount of fret metal coming off in the region of the 13th -16th frets, I really hadn't stuck at it far enough the first time round. This is quite common: In reality I often stop levelling a bit early, before reaching the ideal action. This early 'wimp out' was compounded by the twist in the neck leaving some buzzing and choking requiring a higher-than-ideal playing action.

The guitar has yet to go back to Mark but I'm hoping that he'll find it a lot more playable than it was. It's certainly a looker.
