Mathias Funkadelocaster resurrection Part 2
** Warning! Long, unedited video. Not to be consumed for entertainment purposes. May contain traces of mistakes **
This video starts with me looking at one of those mistakes (mentioned in the disclaimer lol): I over counter-sunk one of the holes. But heck, it's a phoenix not a showroom guitar!
So onwards with the neck: time to fill the old holes and prepare some new ones to take the Fender square tuners from the old guitar. Near the start you'll hear me talking about my 'Banana' fret levelling tool - and why I came to be using it (while I'm doing the mindless masking tape work).
The video goes on to show me putting on the 'Mathias' Funkadelocaster 2' decal made with ink-jet waterslide decal paper. You can get this from Amazon - about £5 for 5 sheets but considering how many logos you can get from each A4 sheet...well, it's very cheap. As it happens, this first decal had too much crinkling round the edges for my liking and the next day, off camera, I sanded / rubbed it all off and started again. Currently it's going well and the brushed on lacquer is curing until I work on it at the weekend and start sanding it flat.
The decal work is slowing the process down (I'm dying to put that neck back on and start levelling the frets) but it's kind of good that it is. It's giving me time to think about how to make this incarnation of the Funkadelocaster as good as it possibly can be and, at the same time, explore what (if anything) can be done with the remaining original components.
Currently we have a body with the split/mashed wood chiseled out (ready to take a block of solid hardwood to provide a strong replacement footing for the tremelo if we wanted to re-used it); a neck (still twisted) and...a load of over-complicated tremelo parts. And an empty black pickguard. We also have a full set of Sunn Mustang electrics which on their own sound pretty damn good.
Who knows?
