F-15 West Coast Demo Team
Last Public Airshow Demonstration
Captain Sam "Nuke" Joplin

2009 AirPower Over Hampton Roads
Langley AFB, Virginia
Sunday April 26, 2009
This is one of the most historic moments I have ever been able to catch at an airshow. You will see Captain Sam "Nuke" Joplin perform his final airshow performance, and with that, witness every portion of that demonstration from the time he gets to the aircraft to the time he shuts down and salutes his crew chiefs. The portions of the video you see here that contain Nuke and his crew chiefs were shot by my friend Keith, who was using one of my cameras (the same camera that flew in the Vintage Thunderbird the two previous days).

In addition, you will also see a short demonstration put on by Major Dave "Zeke" Skalicky in the F-22 Raptor and a demonstration of the QF-4E Phantom by Lt.Col. Greg "Bluto" Blount. Jim Beasley Jr. is seen departing Langley's Runway 26 in a P-51D Mustang, painted up in the markings of a Mustang operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force.

You will then see Nuke fly the last public Eagle demonstration and then join up in a Heritage Flight with Beasley, Bluto, and Zeke. Unfortunately for me, the couple who was sitting next to me refused to lower their umbrella (which was only raised during Nuke's demonstration - they had it opened up for a huge part of the day, but never high enough to get in my way), causing me to lose track of Nuke during the dedication pass.

Following the Heritage Flight and the recovery of the F-4, F-22, and P-51, you will see Nuke fly his fini flybys. The video just doesn't do justice to how earth-shatteringly loud each pass was. After Nuke lands, you will see me reposition (hence why I'm all over the place at this point of the video) in order to get all four aircraft taxiing in, and to get Nuke and the F-15 taxiing in and getting hosed down by two of Langley AFB's crash rescue trucks. Following a short pause at show center, the video will pan back to Keith's work with Nuke shutting down and himself getting hosed down.

I would like to thank Keith for taking the second camera and although he wasn't able to get to where I hoped he'd be, he was able to get the shots I hoped he would, and then some. I'd also like to thank Nuke for the great demos all weekend long and for the entire F-15 West Coast Demo Team for a great show. The team has been around for 26 years and it was a real pleasure and honor to be able to capture the final public show for not only myself, but for all members of the F-15 West Coast Demo Team - both of the 2009 team and of past teams.
