Rough waters for Australian cruise industry
KERRY O'BRIEN, PRESENTER: For centuries travel on the high seas has conjured up images of romance and adventure. But over the past 30 years the cruise line industry has struggled to compete against the aviation boom.
Now the tide apparently has turned. Cruising is more mainstream and affordable, making it an increasingly popular choice for tourists worldwide
And Australia is a major beneficiary. The cruising industry contributed more than $700 million last year to the domestic economy.
But it's not all clear sailing as the volume of traffic has grown it's also exposed some major problems with port facilities that may well result in some very expensive lost opportunities. Just ask the Port of Brisbane.
