1920s England from the Air: Blackpool, Lancashire’s Golden Mile
Welcome to a rare aerial moment above Blackpool in the high summer of 1920, captured at a time when Britain’s most famous seaside resort stood at the height of its interwar popularity. From this elevated vantage point, the town unfolds as a dense, exuberant tapestry of iron, steel, promenades, and pleasure, set against the wide sweep of the Irish Sea.
At the centre of the scene rises Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894 and directly inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Standing 518 feet tall, it dominated the Lancashire coastline for decades and symbolised modern engineering confidence, constructed from some 2,500 tons of steel and iron by Bolton engineers. Around it, the Winter Gardens complex gleams, the great Ferris wheel turns steadily, and the town’s amusement infrastructure hums with activity.
Below, miles of golden sand are crowded with holidaymakers. These are largely factory workers from Lancashire and Yorkshire, enjoying their precious annual break during Wakes Week, when entire mills closed and industrial towns emptied en masse. For many, Blackpool represented freedom, novelty, and collective escape: salt air after months of mill dust, music after the clatter of looms, and dancing that stretched long into the night.
This single image captures Blackpool as the “people’s playground” of the early 20th century—loud, proud, and unapologetically popular—offering a vivid snapshot of working-class leisure, technological spectacle, and the social rhythms of post-war Britain at the dawn of the 1920s.
