SS Normandie: From Glory to Disaster / Original Preserved Footage

The SS Normandie, launched in 1932, was one of the most luxurious and technologically advanced ocean liners of its time. Built by the French Line (Compagnie Générale Transatlantique), it was designed to showcase French engineering and Art Deco elegance, setting new standards for transatlantic travel. Normandie was the largest and fastest passenger ship of its era, breaking records when it crossed the Atlantic in just 4 days, 3 hours, and 14 minutes in 1935, earning the Blue Riband for the fastest voyage.

Every aspect of Normandie’s design was groundbreaking, from its sleek hull and innovative turbo-electric engines to its opulent interiors inspired by French art and culture. The ship featured grand salons, a vast dining hall, luxurious cabins, and the first-ever use of air conditioning on an ocean liner.

In 1942, after being seized by the United States during World War II and renamed USS Lafayette, Normandie tragically caught fire while being converted into a troopship. The fire led to its capsizing at a New York dock, marking a premature end to what was once considered the greatest ocean liner ever built.
