▶ Franz Reichelt and the Fatal Eiffel Tower Jump, 1912 / Original Preserved Footage

Welcome to this fascinating collection of original film footage and vintage photographs documenting the final experiment of Franz Reichelt (1879–1912), an Austrian-born tailor and inventor whose fatal parachute test took place in Paris on 4th February 1912.

At the dawn of the 20th century, aviation was advancing rapidly, yet personal safety devices for pilots remained rudimentary. Reichelt sought to solve this problem by designing a wearable parachute suit, intended to allow aviators to escape aircraft in emergencies. After several unsuccessful unmanned trials, he petitioned French authorities for permission to conduct a test from the first platform of the Eiffel Tower, approximately 57 metres above the ground.

Although officials believed he would use a dummy, Reichelt ultimately chose to jump himself. The event was filmed and photographed, making it one of the earliest fatal accidents ever captured on motion picture film. His parachute failed to deploy correctly, and Reichelt died instantly on impact.

This collection presents surviving footage of the jump alongside period photographs showing Reichelt, his apparatus, and the aftermath. Beyond the tragedy, these images illuminate the risks faced by early aviation pioneers, the experimental nature of innovation before modern safety standards, and a moment when optimism and ambition outpaced technological reality.
