The platysma is a paired flat, superficial neck muscle. It is counted among the facial, or mimic musculature. The platysma extends from the facial skin slightly above the insertions of the mandible to about the height of the second rib. It proceeds upward along the front side of the neck crossing the collar bone.

The functions of the platysma are generally related to facial expression. Complete contraction of its fibers creates a taut and slightly wrinkled look on the skin of the neck, pulling in an inferolateral direction. The anteriormost portion of the platysma also assists in depression of the lower lip, and angles of the mouth.
