The diaphragm is a skeletal muscle that resides in the trunk of the body and separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities from one another. Its function occurs during breathing, where it contracts to enlarge the thoracic cavity and reduce the intrathoracic pressure, so that the lungs may expand and fill their alveoli with air.

The central tendon of the diaphragm is the result of many musculoskeletal fibers which radiate from all angles to the center of the body and converge to form this tendon. The diaphragm is innervated by the phrenic nerve, which arises from the fibers of the third to fifth cervical spinal root ganglia.

This video will explore the main characteristics of the diaphragm as a muscle. In addition to that, we will identify the different openings found on the diaphragm and the structures that run through them.
