Big Mama is Back! The First Humpbacks have Arrived in the Salish Sea

Humpbacks have been coming to feed in the waters of the Salish Sea for thousands of years. However, in the 1900s, they stopped visiting due to over whaling, and weren’t seen here until 1997, when a female humpback and her calf were sighted. Since then, humpbacks have been seen in the inland waters every year. This video shows five individual humpbacks feeding just off of East Saturna Island. The first three were unidentified, but the second two, mother and calf, were. The mother turned out to be BCY0324, more commonly known as Big Mama, that first female who spurred the return of these whales in ‘97. Since her first return, she’s had a total of seven calves. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any playful behavior from the newborn, but I expect to see these two again this summer
