That’s All Folks! End of Season Lay-Up Arrival of the Paul R. Tregurtha January 15, 2022
While she’s technically the second to last ship to sail to the Twin Ports for winter layup, most of us locals, myself included, are considering this arrival the grand finale of the 2021/22 shipping season. I’m considering Big Paul’s arrival to be the finale because of the atmosphere; huge crowd, an almost full moon, and a beautiful sunset…. You can’t end the season better than that. The Tregurtha is the fourth ship spending the winter here in Duluth/Superior, the other three being Burns Harbor, James R. Barker, and Lee A. Tregurtha. There is only one other ship heading towards the Twin Ports for layup, and that’s the American Century, who (at the time of writing) was at anchor still on the other side of Lake Superior just outside the Soo Locks. Once she gets moving, it’ll be 26 hours before she arrives.
Info about the Paul R. Tregurtha:
Launched in 1981 as the William J. De Lancey (nicknamed Fancy De Lancey), Interlake's M/V Paul R. Tregurtha is the largest vessel ever to sail on the Great Lakes. Measuring in at 1,014 feet long and 105 feet wide, she was the last of the thirteen 1,000 footers to set sail. She is a regular sight in the Twin Ports, arriving almost every week of the shipping season.
Her main shipping route starts in the Twin Ports, where she loads with up to 71,000 tons of coal, after which she departs for power plants in and around Detroit. After unloading, she makes her return here. Occasionally, she loads up to 68,000 tons of taconite pellets for other destinations.
During the 2017/18 winter layup, Paul R. Tregurtha was equipped with an exhaust gas scrubber system to reduce sulfur emissions. Exhaust gas from the engines is sent through a series of absorption sprays that wash and remove impurities, specifically sulfur and particulate matter. That washed exhaust gas then travels through a droplet separator before a clean plume of white steam is discharged into the atmosphere.
Paul R. Tregurtha has set numerous records over her lifespan, notably, she is recorded to have carried the most cargo through the Soo Locks during a season (3,004,957 tons in total) back in 2004
