Tajikistan – A Basic Introduction
Tajikistan's awesomely dramatic highland landscapes are now testing playgrounds for hardy climbers, trekkers and adventure travelers. But it’s not just thrill-seekers who can benefit from spending some time in Tajikistan; a country rich in culture and guaranteed to give you life experience like no other … Here are a few things you may not know about this naturally beautiful country.
1) Tajikistan is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, including the Pamir and Alay ranges. 93% percent of Tajikistan is mountainous!
2) The term ‘Tajikistan’ comes from the Persian language and literally means ‘Land of the Tajiks’.
3) Tajikistan is one of the poorest countries in the world with 47% of the population living below the national poverty and 28% living on less than $2 a day and.
4) Despite being an extremely poor country, Tajikistan actually has the 8th highest literacy rates in the world – at a staggering 99.6% as of 2015. The country has a system of free education, allowing even the poorest of children to learn how to read and write.
5) The national dish is plov (a dish consisting of rice cooked in seasoned broth with spices, meat and vegetables), while green tea is the national drink. If you haven’t tried plov, don’t let the name fool you – it’s delicious!
6) The official language of Tajikistan is Tajik, while Russian is widely spoken in business and for government purposes.
7) Tajikistan is amongst the smallest nations in central Asia and it’s completely landlocked. It borders Uzbekistan to the west, and China to the east.
8) 98% of the population of Tajikistan are Muslim (approximately 95% Sunni and 3% Shia), with the remaining 2% primarily followers of Russian Orthodoxy.
9) After gaining their independence in 1991 from the Soviet Union, Tajikistan suffered a 5 year civil war which took the lives of over 50,000 people. However, Tajikistan is making smart investments with China and Russia, planning to build for the future. It may be worth investing in this upcoming underdog!
