6. Sleeping Pattern
Lack of sleep, as expected, is the leading cause of daytime fatigue. By going to bed early enough for a full night’s sleep, you’re also gaining many other important health benefits. If you do fall short on shut-eye, take a brief afternoon nap of up to 30 minutes. These are known as power naps and are extremely effective at restoring wakefulness, as well as promoting general performance and learning. A 20-minute power nap is ideal for boosting energy. However, sleeping too much during the day will make it difficult to sleep at night, so be careful.
7. Food
Your diet is one of the most important things to consider when making any kind of lifestyle change. It’s best to avoid foods where the ingredient list is full of items ending in ‘-ose,’ like glucose or fructose. If you focus on avoiding foods with long ingredient lists, you’ll naturally gravitate towards whole foods. For more energy, specifically focus on foods with magnesium and iron, which you can find in seeds, nuts, fish, and colourful, leafy vegetables. Additionally, don’t skip breakfast. Even if you have a small bowl of cereal or slice of toast, it can jumpstart your metabolism and remind your body to wake up. If you don’t have time for a nutritious breakfast, simply eat a banana. It’s packed with natural sugars, and higher in starch than most other fruit so bananas provide the perfect blend of instant and slow-release energy.
8. Shed Extra Weight
Losing extra weight can provide a powerful energy boost. Even the slightest reductions in body fat improve mood, vigour, and quality of life. Most weight loss experts recommend cutting back on portion sizes, eating balanced meals, and increasing physical activity. The easiest way to lose weight is to eat meals with plenty of vegetables, just enough meat and the most important part? NO Dessert!
9. Coffee & Other Energy Drinks Are Draining You
Your coffee addiction is sapping your energy rather than replenishing it. The bitter truth is that coffee is bad news for our brain chemistry. Although we think of caffeine as a pick-me-up, it actually makes us feel more tired once the initial surge wears off. This is because our brain chemistry doesn’t like being interfered with by stimulants, so it releases chemicals to dampen down the alert response. Coffee also severely disrupts our sleep. Drinking it even six hours prior to bedtime will cause you to have improper sleep. Therefore, avoiding caffeine in favour of water will increase energy levels in the long run – but cut down gradually, cup by cup, to avoid headaches and irritability.
10. Stress
You’re storing up stress. Take a break: The stress of daily life can be exhausting. While stress in small doses helps to keep us on our toes, long-term stress – for example from work or relationship problems – can exhaust the body, as well as being emotionally draining. It’s our response to stress that’s much more damaging to our health than the stress itself. So by learning how to diffuse stressful situations, we can reduce their negative impact. When stress strikes, instead of going frantic to fix things, try to slow down and take a break instead. Call a friend, walk the dog or take a hot bath.
