Top Secret & Most Restricted Places On Earth
The ‘Doomsday’ Seed Vault
Imagine a post-apocalyptic world where all food sources were destroyed and famine began to set in… You would kind of wish someone thought to store masses of every seed of every known plant in the world in a secure location… Oh wait… That’s exactly what they did. The Svalbard Global “Doomsday” Seed Vault, located in Norway, would provide enough food to sustain the remaining human population should a catastrophic event occur. At least, that’s the plan.
The White House Situation Room
The Situation Room is a secure room in the White House where the president of the United States and his advisors gather to discuss top-secret life or death situations. This room is 50 feet below the West Wing and only the President and his advisors are allowed access. The only time we’ll see any action happening in the White House Situation room is in political or military-themed TV shows and movies. Otherwise, it’s closed off to the world.
Japanese Shrine
One testament to Japan’s grasp of its cultural and religious roots is the existence of the Ise Grand Shrine, dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu-Omikami. The Japanese legends say that the goddess herself chose the site thousands of years ago for its peacefulness and seclusion. The shrine is the holding place for precious spiritual and sacred objects that are of historical importance, such as the Sacred Mirror or Yata no Kagami. As intriguing as this place sounds, nobody is allowed entrance except the priests and priestesses of the Japanese royal family. It’s also guarded by Japanese military and surrounded by a fence. In fact, the only parts of the shrine the public can view are the thatched roofs of the structures. Interestingly, the shrine is destroyed and reconstructed every 20 years in adherence to the Shinto concept of death and rebirth.
Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ)
At the end of the Korean War in 1953, a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula was established to differentiate between the areas of North and South Korea. Today, this border remains one of the most heavily guarded areas in the world – spanning 250 kilometres long and 4 km wide. While tours to the public are available at the DMZ’s joint security area, the rest of the border is considered extremely dangerous and has seen numerous violent incidents over the years resulting in multiple deaths by shooting or mine explosions. These deaths are typically attributed to soldiers attempting to cross over the border or occur when illegally constructed tunnels across the border are discovered.
Coca Cola Vault
Coca-Cola's original recipe is a very closely guarded secret. In fact, it's so closely guarded that Coca-Cola built an entire secretive vault that only a few are allowed to open solely for that recipe. Is it going a little overboard…? Maybe. But when you're the world's number 1 beverage manufacturer, you can never be too careful.
Mezhgorye, Russia
In the Russian Ural Mountain range, specifically on Yamantau Mountain, lies a huge underground facility. There are rumours that its more than 400 miles total. Nobody is quite sure of the purpose of the complex but it’s speculated to be an underground bunker in case of nuclear disasters and might have also been used at one point to store food and Russian treasures. The American government found out about the structure in 1992 but the Russian government has remained silent regarding the true purpose and operations of the facility. Officials estimate it took over 10,000 workers finish the structure.
Vatican Secret Archives
If you've read Angels and Demons or seen the Da Vinci Code, then you've probably heard about the Vatican archives. The archive contains numerous documents preserved within an airtight chamber. There is one area in particular within the archives that is strictly off limits to everyone. According to the archive's secretary, this area contains information on the personal affairs of cardinals and information on annulled marriages.
Bohemian Grove
Every summer for around 150-years, this secretive California camp ground hosts a gathering of the most powerful men in the world. Past presidents such as Richard Nixon and Herbert Hoover have attended these events where private meetings occur to address the state of politics, economy and world powers. It’s said that a meeting at this retreat was directly responsible for the Manhattan project - the project that led to the development of the atomic bomb.
