President Biden recently signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act resulting in $80 billion (yes, BILLION) in funding for the IRS.

The funding will go toward multiple purposes, but the most talked about is the hiring of thousands of new IRS agents.

Social media has portrayed this hiring increase as a threat to everyone – the fear being that these new agents will be beating down doors to conduct audits. According to social media, everyone will soon be in danger of being audited. Luckily, that is not the case.

So, what will these new agents be doing? And who will be affected?

While it is true that the overall number of audits may increase, it is unlikely that this will affect most Americans. The IRS will be focusing on auditing high-net-worth individuals and large corporations. Families or businesses with a combined income of less than $400,000 are unlikely to be on their radar.

These new exam agents will focus on sophisticated schemes to hide assets or schemes to avoid reporting income and paying taxes.

Another thing these agents will be working on is creating a computerized system to duplicate their work with technology. The IRS is known to be behind when it comes to technology, and many of these agents will be focusing on increasing IRS’s technological abilities.

Bottom line: The average individual or business owner likely will not be affected by the hiring of new agents.
