My dad was a big fan of solving simple problems with ingenuity rather than dollars – and he consistently demonstrated that point in a host of practical ways.
The problem I needed to solve is how to transition a significant number of tools, building supplies, as well as keepsakes (i.e. the go-kart that won me the opportunity to compete in Italy) up to the second-floor barn storage area – when both of my tractors lift capacity falls about 8” short of what is required.
One answer would have been to rent a telehandler for a couple of weeks ($2k), or buy a used telehandler ($40k+), or buy a tractor or loader with a greater lift capacity.
I went a different way. Tons of fun solving little challenges like this.
