The Star Wars galaxy is full of immensely powerful weapons with the ability to destroy whole planets and in some cases, entire star systems. Although these weapons were terrible, atg
least the deaths of those unfortunate citizens would have been quick and painless.
However, the weapon we are talking about today is not so humane. In fact it was so horrific that even the imperials banned their use. These weapons were of course the disruptor. In todays video, we will discuss how these weapons worked, their history and why they were the cruelest weapons in the galaxy.
The disruptor was developed sometime during the Old Republic era but was soon banned by the Republic.
However, due to its high accuracy, long range and relatively quick particle beam, it soon became very popular with snipers working in the underworld. Most notably, these weapons became very popular with the warrior people of the Mandalorians. As personal energy shields became more common, the disruptor rifles became much more effective as they were able to pass through most kinds of shields.
After the fall of the Republic, the Empire took particular interest in this technology. They soon developed the T7- ion disruptor rifle, one of the most destructive weapons ever produced. Upon impact with a target, a small explosion would take place, disintegrating anything or anyone within it's radius. Due to the projectiles ability to pass through energy shielding and thick armour, these weapons were particularly useful against star fighters and other armoured units. The Empire used this with lethal efficiency against the Lasat Species, pretty much driving them to extrictintion using this weapon.
So how did this weapon work? On a basic level, a disruptor worked by compressing enormous quantities of blaster gas, such as Tibanna gas mined on Cloud City. On the surface, this was similar to how a normal blaster worked but there were some crucial differences.
The blaster gas underwent a transformation which would render it more unstable and therefore more destructive than a regular blaster bolt.
The wave of non-harmonic, disruptor energy would excite the victims molecules to the point that the bonds would break apart, leading to the target's instant disintegration.
So why was this so bad that the empire banned its use? It sounds like a quicker death than regular regular blaster right? Very wrong.
The simultaneous breakdown of every molecular bond within the victim's body would stimulate every single neuron and nerve ending at once. This would cause the subjective time of the target to slow down considerably. So even if in real time only a fraction of a second had passed, in the experience of the individual getting disintegrated it would take minutes or even hours for every single part of their body to turn to be ripped apart.
It was for this reason that even the Imperial Senate became a little queasy and soon banned their use after the geocide of the Lasat species. So when Din Djarin or Boba uses this weapon, they are actually breaking several imperial laws and new Republic laws as well as being pretty awful people.
However, in the mandalorians' defence, this gruesome explanation may simply be anti-mandalorian propaganda. It seems unlikely that anyone has actually survived being disintegrated so it is unknown if the fate of the victims really was this bad. Afterall, the ban on the disruptor during the Republic era was enacted during a time when the Republic was less than friendly with the Mandalorians and would have had plenty of reasons to paint them as brutal barbarians.
Similarly, the Imperial senate was heavily influenced by more rebellious worlds who wished to curb the military might of the imperials. What's more, the imperial friendly systems in the senate may have very well gone along with it so they could continue to disarm the mandalorians and continue to paint them as evil savages. So while the explanation may very well be true, there are plenty of reasons to believe that it may in fact be anti-mandalorian propaganda.
Thank you for watching guys and as always, may the force be with you.
