The wedding of Prince Leopold and Princess Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont

Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany was the 8th child and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Prince Leopold and Princess Helen became engaged in November 1881; it seemed like the couple were very fond of each other, unfortunately their marriage would be cut short with a tragic ending for everyone that loved Prince Leopold.

The wedding took place on April 27th 1882 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. As tradition, the wedding was a lavish celebration, Princess Helen wore a satan dress with silver lilies, lace and a diamond crown.

The couple were smitten with each other.

The couple welcome a daughter in February of 1883 and a son in 1884, however once Leopold’s son was born, Leopold would unfortunately be dead.

Prince Leopold’s doctor had suggested that Leopold leave England during the winter as the cold hurt his joints (a side effect of hemophilia), with encouragement from his pregnant wife Prince Leopold went to Cannes, France for the remainder of the winter. Prince Leopold had left in February 1884 and by the end of March Prince Leopold would be dead.

On March 27th 1884 Prince Leopold had slipped and fell at his Cannes residences and injured his knee and his head, by early the next morning on March 28th Prince Leopold was dead, Leopold died from a brain hemorrhage.

Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany was the second of Queen Victoria’s nine children to unfortunately died before her, Princess Alice had passed six years before Leopold. Queen Victoria was absolutely devastated over the loss of both her children.
