Lion on the loose: Escaped circus cat captured after night out in Italian seaside town
After a night of panic for residents of Ladispoli, Italy — triggered by a lion that escaped a local circus on Saturday and began roaming the streets — the ferocious feline, known as Kimba, has been returned to captivity at "Circo Rony Roller."
Fortunately, curiosity didn’t kill this cat. Through the power of infrared sensors, police helicopters and large sedatives, Kimba’s seven-hour jaunt was put to an end on Sunday afternoon by local authorities.
“What happened is very strange. The lion got out, and there is an ongoing investigation because the dynamics are not clear,” Rony Roller’s animal supervisor and trainer Rony Vassallo said on Monday. “All we can say is that a lion does not have the ability to open a latch and break a lock.”
The local scare actually boosted ticket sales for Circo Rony Roller after residents wanted to see what all the fuss was about and examine Kimba back in his enclosure.
“'I am sorry, because it is in prison. It should be in its environment, the savannah,” Ladispoli resident Giuseppe Altavilla said on Monday.
Despite losing a few days of business, the travelling circus is scheduled to stay in Ladispoli until Nov. 19.
