Housing crisis, affordability in Canada the top priorities in fall economic statement: Freeland
On Tuesday, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that the upcoming Fall Economic Statement will be focusing on two major issues - making life more affordable for Canadians and addressing the housing crisis.
Freeland says the statement is based on a responsible fiscal plan which will enable the government to invest in what Canadians need right now.
"We know that this is an urgent priority for Canadians, and we believe that the supply of housing is at the heart of this issue. Supply, supply, supply," Freeland emphasized.
Freeland added that the Canadian government is investing $1.2 billion to build 2,644 new rental units across Toronto through the rental construction financing initiative.
“ The rental Construction financing initiative is now on track to build 71,000 new rental housing units across Canada by 2028. That is getting homes built for Canadians, getting exactly the kind of housing Canadians need the most.”
Furthermore, the new rental projects will be located in areas that are close to transit, work, and school, making them easily accessible.
