Enjoy the wonderful Rhineland scenery as we journey from Bingen, the confluence of the Rhine and Nahe, through Mainz to the ancient city of Worms. The right bank railway is leaving the gorge section of the river and passes underneath Burg Ehrenfels with the Binger Mäuseturm- Mouse Tower in the middle of the river – glorious! The left bank railway passes through Bingen station then crosses the Nahe. The railway alongside the Nahe is due to be upgraded and electrified by DB Netz as a way to relieve pressure on nearby Mainz – we discuss the project! Mainz is the city at the confluence of the Rhine and the Main (which flows through Frankfurt). Its rail geography is complex with railways on both sides of the Rhine and Main. There are bridges over the Rhine north and south of the city and a bridge over the Main. This multifaceted layout is easier to understand from the air. In addition we spend time at the attractive Hbf and at Mainz-Kastel (the best place in the city to watch freight trains) on the right bank. We follow trains south along the three main routes: via Worms, via Biblis (the Riedbahn) and via Darmstadt (the Rhein-Neckarbahn) to Mannheim. RT 62 mins Narrated
