Enjoy wonderful Rhineland scenery with us as we follow the mighty river south from Remagen. We look at the local traffic hub at Remagen and see the new order – Siemens Desiro ‘Mainline’ trains operated by Transdev, the 20 year old ICs that still ply the left bank and DB Regio’s new LINT diesel units. We cross the river to watch trains through ‘picture perfect” Linz am Rhein before making our way south through Brohl and Leubsdorf to Andernach. From the air we see left bank trains usually ‘invisible’ below the B5 elevated road and splendid views of freight trains along the right bank. At Neuwied we visit the busy main station and are treated to two of the new Bombardier TRAXX 3 MS in quick succession plus a very noisy Vectron! Koblenz is a very special town- a delightful Altstadt, an interesting Hbf and the German corner or Deutsches Eck where the Mosel meets the Rhine. All this can be seen from the largest fortress on the Rhine - the monumental Ehrenbreitstein- the only place in town where you can see both rail lines along the river. We conclude this instalment at the south bridge or Hochheimer Brücke, an essential part of the rail geography of the Rhine. The bridge was built by the Prussians in 1876 (older than the bridge at Neuwied) as part of the strategic link between Berlin and Metz – the so called ‘Kanonenbahn’. RT 62mins ©FHP 2017
