What Is a Sleeve Gastrectomy
The sleeve gastorectomy, an older bariatric surgery option, was once considered the first in a two-stage surgical process for the morbidly obese patient that was too large to safely have bariatric surgery done with a scope. During a sleeve gastorectomy, patients undergo stomach stapling to reduced the stomach to a small "tube" that is approximately 25% of its original size. The remaining portion of the stomach is then removed from the body.
The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach as well as reduces hunger. Sometimes, patients that have undergone a sleeve gastorectomy go back to have a standard gastric bypass or a duodenal switch procedure completed. Although with good best practices in healthy cooking and careful eating choices, many sleeve gastorectomy patients have a successful surgical outcome.

Questions answered in this video:
Q: How much can I eat after having a sleeve gastorectomy?
A: After the first-stage of a sleeve gastorectomy, patients have a small stomach reservoir and thus need to eat small meals.
Q: How is my appetitie after having a sleeve gastorectomy?
A: When the portion of the stomach is removed during the procedure, so is the appetite. That is because this bariatric surgery removes the part of the stomach that produces the hormone ghrelin, which is the hormone that stimulates hunger.
