Introduction to Bariatric Surgery by Dr. Poplawski
Dr. Poplawski, a Ypsilanti Bariatric surgeon of 14-years and over 3,000 bariatric surgeries, presents at one of his free weight loss surgery seminars.
The first line of morbid obesity is to eat less and exercise more. When that doesn't work, the next step is to work with a physician to find out if there is a medical reason why weight loss is not happening. Tests and a medical write up are created and often diet pills, nutritional therapy and/or exercise counseling are recommended before as a first line of defense to weight loss.
When medical management of obesity fails, and it becomes unreasonable to keep working on weight loss, it then becomes reasonable to speak with an experienced bariatric surgeon. That surgeon will then help better understand how you uniquely deal with the stress that has caused your weight gain. The surgeon will ask:
- How you manage your stress.
- How you sooth and comfort yourself.
- How you manage your boredom.
- How do you respond to anxiety.
This is a big part of weight loss; How well you understand triggers, how to better manage them and how to change the reasons for your weight gain is a primary focus in the bariatric treatment of morbid obesity. Even with perfect bariatric surgery, individuals still need to change. Bariatric surgery will help you lose weight, but at the same time the stressors that caused the weight gain need to be addressed. Patients that are successful in addressing this are the ones that do the best long-term.
