Questions answered in this video:
Q: Does gastric bypass surgery cure acid reflux and heartburn?
A: The lower stomach still responds to stimuli producing the acid however the anatomy of the digestive tract has been changed which does not allow the acid to reach your esophagus. Thus bariatric surgery is said to often cure acid relfux and heartburn.
Q: Do you remove any parts of the digestive tract during a gastric bypass procedure?
A: During standard gastric bypass surgery, the intestines are re-routed however nothing is removed from the body.
Q: What is dumping syndrome?
A: Dumping syndrome in patients who have had gastric bypass surgery happens when high calorie foods that contain too much sugar, high in fat, use shortening or butter are consumed. The body will still absorb part of the calories, however it can not absorb it all and thus will send it out of the body.
Q: Can you use a scope in gastric bypass surgery?
A: Gastric bypass surgery has been done effectively since the 1970's. What is different now however is that most gastric bypass operations can be done with a scope instead of making a large incision. Doing a gastric bypass this way is easier on the patient and speeds up healing.
