Elizabeth Reid at the 1975 World Conference of the International Women's Year

Australian delegate Elizabeth Reid addresses the World Conference of the International Women's Year, at Mexico City in 1975.

The conference was convened to coincide with the 1975 International Women's Year and remind the international community that discrimination against women continued to be a persistent problem in much of the world. At the urging of the conference, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the United Nations Decade for Women (1976-1985). This time saw a new era in global efforts to promote the advancement of women by opening a worldwide dialogue on gender equality.

Elizabeth Reid represented Australian women at the conference. She had been appointed the world's first advisor on women's affairs to a head of state by the Australian Labor Government of Gough Whitlam in 1973. This is her speech delivered to the conference.
