Is Cuba modern enough for young people? | VPRO Documentary
In this final episode, our presenter is looking back at what he has seen and is asking himself if Cuba has changed enough to return? Is Cuba modern enough for young people? Is Cuba, with its religion, constitution, and socialism attractive for the new generation?
In this four-part series, Cuban-Dutch Yuri Capetillo Hardy returns to his native country that he left 15 years ago. Going back is always filled with sorrow as his mother died, and his former house is filled with memories. But how is the situation now in Cuba? What has changed, and what is still the same? A documentary about Cuba that tries to capture the soul of the people and the country.
His encounter with young journalists and artists does not immediately lead to optimism, but on the other hand: they speak out, do not seem to be afraid of anything, and they all seem to be extremely concerned about their socialist island.
The following applies to Cuba: nothing is what it seems. The fact that an amendment to the constitution has finally been introduced since 1976 seems positive but has a downside. The people's opium, the faith, is also back on the island and has more influence than Yuri had imagined.
Fortunately, Mariana, who left the Netherlands and decided to live in Cuba, is there again to ask him the key question at the end of his journey: are you coming back or not?
