The laws of the sea | In Europe (full episode) | VPRO World Stories

Over the past two decades, tens of thousands of people have drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in overcrowded boats. A captain who does not save such sailors in hopeless situations is punishable. And one who saves them?

This episode starts with the bizarre story of Captain Stefan Schmidt, who was obliged to help seamen in distress, but then was not allowed to bring them ashore.

Abdul Aziz was one of the crew members who was rescued by Schmidt. He was immediately sent back to Africa, but he did not give up and eventually managed to live in Europe for a few years. Now he is back in Ghana, where he educates young people about the great dangers of migration to Europe.

Captain Pia Klemp saved at least 14,000 people from death with her ship. In 2017, the Italian judiciary seized the ship and accused her of aiding illegal immigration. That could bring her twenty years in prison. In spite of this, Pia remains committed to the refugees.

The VPRO is touring Europe and European history. The series 'In Europe, History caught in the act' picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia. But can you recognize history if you are in the middle of it? If nobody knows how it will end?

The series speaks with witnesses, that without realizing it, ended up in the middle of an important historical event. Every week we publish new videos from the new series and previously broadcast seasons.

In Europe, history caught in the act is a series with Geert Mak by Stefanie de Brouwer and Roel van Broekhoven.

On VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series.
