Athelhampton House & Gardens Dorset

Athelhampton Manor was around prior to 1066 and was mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086. The present House and gardens date from around 1485 when Sir William Martyn received a licence to enclose and fortify his Manor with walls of stone and lime and to build towers and crenellate them. The formal gardens lie mainly to the south and east, built by Alfred Cart de Lafontaine between 1891 & 1899. The House and gardens were aquired by the Cooke family in 1957 and is still a family home as well as welcoming visitors. Wander at your will, there was a very friendly guide during our visit and the gardens and fountains are magnificent.
