Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding region on Tuesday, resulting in at least three fatalities and injuring 17 others, according to Russian officials. The attack also caused a brief shutdown of the Russian capital’s four major airports.
A total of 343 drones were reportedly downed across Russia, with 91 intercepted in the Moscow region and 126 over the western Kursk region. This area, where Ukrainian forces have been retreating, is also near the Kursk nuclear power plant, according to Russia's defense ministry.
The early-morning assault came as U.S. and Ukrainian officials were set to discuss efforts to end the ongoing war in Saudi Arabia, while Russian forces continue to encircle Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that this was the largest Ukrainian drone attack on the city, which, along with the surrounding region, is home to at least 21 million people, making it one of Europe's largest metropolitan areas.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that preventative measures had successfully defended Moscow and other Russian regions from the attacks, which he claimed had struck residential buildings. Russia’s defense ministry accused Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure, while Ukraine’s General Staff asserted that it had struck oil facilities in Russia's Moscow and Oryol regions.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, drones have played a significant role in the conflict, with both sides using them to target cities, troops, oil refineries, and airfields.
On the same day, Kyiv endured a significant strike from Russia, including a ballistic missile and 126 drones. Ukraine has conducted frequent drone raids on Russia in retaliation.
Colonel General Andrei Kartapolov, head of the Russian parliament’s defense committee, suggested that Moscow should retaliate by using the "Oreshnik" hypersonic missile against Ukraine for Tuesday's attack.
The Russian meat producer Miratorg reported that two of its employees were killed by falling debris, with a third later dying from injuries sustained in the attack.
Flights at all four of Moscow's airports were suspended temporarily after the strikes, but air traffic resumed later, with some flights being diverted to other cities.
As the conflict intensifies, with Russian forces launching a major offensive in Kursk, both Moscow and Kyiv have been ramping up their drone capabilities, deploying them in innovative ways to target enemy positions and infrastructure. Russia has fortified its defenses with advanced air defense systems and electronic "umbrellas" over key installations to protect against such attacks.
Despite calls for peace from figures like U.S. President Donald Trump, the war continues to escalate, with both sides investing heavily in drone warfare, which has become a central feature of the ongoing conflict. President Vladimir Putin has condemned Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, as "terrorism," vowing a strong response.
