**Burundi President Claims Rwanda Plans Attack, Tensions Escalate Amid Regional Conflicts**
Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, has made explosive claims regarding Rwanda’s intentions towards his country, stating that he has seen "credible intelligence" suggesting that Rwanda plans to attack Burundi. In an interview with the BBC, Ndayishimiye also accused Rwanda of attempting to launch a coup in Burundi a decade ago, an act similar to what he described as Rwanda's ongoing involvement in destabilizing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the M23 rebel group. Rwanda has rejected these claims, calling them "surprising" and insisting that the two nations are cooperating on border security despite the border being closed for over a year.
Ndayishimiye further accused Rwanda of supporting proxy forces in Burundi, particularly the Red Tabara rebel group, which he claims destabilizes Burundi in a similar manner to the M23’s actions in the DRC. He stated that Rwanda, under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, continues to stir conflict in the region, citing the involvement of Rwandan troops alongside the M23 in eastern DRC. Despite Rwanda's denials, the Burundian president insists that peace can only be achieved if Rwanda fully adheres to peace agreements and stops its alleged support for rebel groups.
In response to the tensions, Ndayishimiye emphasized that Burundi does not seek to go to war with Rwanda but will defend itself if attacked. He called for dialogue to resolve the longstanding issues, including the border closure and the failure of Rwanda to honor previous peace deals. The Burundi-Rwanda border remains closed after a series of attacks by Red Tabara rebels, and Ndayishimiye has warned that his country is prepared to protect its sovereignty.
While relations with Rwanda are critical, Ndayishimiye also discussed the broader regional instability, particularly the ongoing conflict in the DRC. He blamed external forces for perpetuating the conflict, particularly over the control of the DRC's rich mineral resources, and called for a more inclusive peace process involving all parties, including armed groups and opposition political parties. Ndayishimiye criticized Rwanda's military actions in the DRC, questioning why Congolese civilians were being killed in the process of targeting the FDLR, a Rwandan rebel group.
The DRC has been embroiled in conflict for decades, with multiple rebel groups, militias, and foreign actors vying for control of the country's resources. The recent surge in violence, especially by the M23 rebel group and Rwandan troops, has led to mass displacement, with many Congolese fleeing across the Rusizi river to seek refuge in Burundi. Ndayishimiye dismissed claims that Burundi's border with the DRC was closed, insisting that refugees could return to their country if they wished, though he pointed out the risks involved in crossing the river.
Ndayishimiye also stated that Burundi would not withdraw its forces from the DRC until it was assured that its borders were secure. The situation remains tense as southern African leaders recently announced the withdrawal of their forces from the DRC, following casualties in clashes with the M23 rebels.
The ongoing tensions between Burundi and Rwanda, along with the larger regional instability, continue to pose challenges to peace and security in Central Africa. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with many hoping for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the disputes.
