UN Security Council Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in DRC as M23 Rebels Expand Control**
The United Nations Security Council has issued an urgent call for anti-government militants in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to immediately halt hostilities and withdraw from the areas they currently control.
This appeal comes as the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, continues to expand its territorial control in the eastern region of the conflict-ridden central African nation.
In a significant development, M23 rebels have entered the center of Bukavu, a major city in the DRC, and are rapidly gaining ground in the surrounding areas.
Bintou Keita, the head of the UN mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), emphasized that the presence of M23 rebels in the eastern North Kivu province is hampering peacekeeping efforts. She noted that the continued occupation of parts of North Kivu by M23 fighters, with support from the Rwandan Defense Forces, is severely limiting MONUSCO's ability to carry out its mission and protect civilians.
Keita explained that the rebels are obstructing life-saving operations and preventing peacekeepers from fulfilling their mandate to safeguard local populations.
Humanitarian concerns are mounting as ongoing clashes in South Kivu's Uvira have made it increasingly difficult for aid organizations to access those in need. Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, reported that hospitals in the region have been overwhelmed with civilian casualties from the ongoing conflict.
Fighting in the Kalehe territory has led to the displacement of more than 50,000 people in the past week, with many fleeing to neighboring Burundi. Since the beginning of February, over 40,000 Congolese nationals—mostly women and children—have sought refuge in Burundi.
In response to the crisis, Kenyan President William Ruto and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire in the DRC. Following a phone conversation, the two leaders pledged to support diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, including appointing facilitators, implementing the ceasefire, and working toward a broader political resolution.
