Toyota Rav4 cylinder head strip & piston removal - Ep3 #1117
The third in a series of videos covering the diagnosis & repair of a poorly running Rav4 engine. The engine had dropped a cylinder & was only running on 3. Watch in this video as I go through the step by step procedure for removing the remaining valves from the cylinder head & extract the pistons & con-rods from the engine block - no easy task it seams on a Rav4!
The further I progress into this repair job to more I'm coming to the conclusion that the engine, transmission & 4x4 transfer case should really be removed from the underside of the shell together with the front sub-frame - as one unit so to speak.
Its looking more & more likely that I'll be removing the rest of the components that way so that the engine can be built up on the bench & then installed as a complete, assembled unit, back into the vehicle.
This will allow a far more professional job, allowing for a complete engine rebuild, all component measurements, including crank journals, bearing clearances & replacement of all gaskets & seals too.
This stage of the repairs covers the preparation of the cylinder head & block ready for measurements & inspection of all valves, valve guides, pistons & bores.
Just to note, when I removed the valve oil stem seals (not to camera), all of the exhaust stem seals were almost loose on the guides requiring very little effort to remove compared to the ones fitted to the intake side. This I feel is another indication that at some point this engine has overheated, though on this occasion, the head gasket has not failed but it has caused the stem seals to go very hard causing oil leakage into the exhaust port.
So, follow me through the third stage of this repair...
The next video in this series will be uploaded in a few days...
Any questions or comments just leave them blow and I'll do my best to get back to you shortly...
