Smelly Ear Infection - Removal of Dead Skin & Debris by Endoscopic Suction - #382

Ear wax removal is necessary when ear wax build up becomes impacted. Symptoms causes by earwax blockage include: earache (otalgia), conductive hearing loss, blocked ear, vertigo, tinnitus, itchiness and irritation, occlusion etc.

The client was referred to see me specifically by their GP. He presented with right-sided occluding dead skin and debris. Prior to attending, he was being treated for an ear infection. There was an offensive acidic odour coming from the ear which suggested the ear infection may still be present.

His ear canal was very inflamed and narrow. It was difficult for me to even insert the Zoellner suction probe. There was little working space as a result. Nonetheless, I successfully managed to remove the majority of infected debris and dead skin that was occluding and coating the ear canal and eardrum. During the procedure, the client developed a ‘gag’ reflex, which can happen during ear procedures as they stimulate nerves typically at the base of the ear canal. Even so, he was extremely still throughout. There was a bit of dead skin in the top right corner of his ear canal which I attempted to remove by bending the Fine End, however, I could feel the client twitch slightly even though no contact was being made. This can also be due to stimulation of nerves via pressure applied to open the ear canal entrance with the endoscope and/or the suction pressure itself. Not wanting to put the client under any unnecessary pain or distress, I left this as the entire eardrum was visible in anycase.

I’ve recommended the gentlemen to not wear his hearing aid to allow the ear to breathe to help overcome the infection. This also means avoiding water entering the ear canal. I have sent a referral to his GP for further treatment.
